Blithfield Reservoir -Trout Fishing

Blitfield reservoir (http://www.blithfield-anglers.co.uk/ )located in a quaint village of Abbots Bromley in Staffordshire, it has two lakes north and south with a connecting tunnel under a bridge. The water is some 790 acres and run by south Staffordshire water and the Fly Fishing by Blithfield Fly anglers. The fishery caters for both bank and boat angling, with an excellent fleet of boats that are well maintained. The staff are also very friendly, and eager to help in making your day more enjoyable, pre covid and hopefully post, the clubhouse located on the opposite side to the main office and paying in the centre has a seating area to eat your food, brewing equipment provided

Blithfield is unquestionably one of my favourite fishery. As it is within easy travelling distance, well run and probably one of the best topwater sport, I mean dry fly fishing. This does not mean fly fishing is the only method in catching trout, it fishes well on all methods, buzzers, nymphs, lures etc.

Flies, these can vary but cover the whole range, these can vary from day to day so speak to the fishery or contact me via the blog as I do go regularly.

It has a road or track that goes around the lakes but beware it has deep ruts, I would suggest you park up and walk if you are bank angling. If you have a car with a high suspension or a 4 x 4 it will give you more access.

Review and Ratings

Car Parking – 8/10

The place has ample space to park your cars at the boathouse or if bank fishing along with areas of the lakes. The car park is clean and clearly marked with a good gap in between the spaces.

Disabled Access – 9/10

The fishery has a wheely boat that accommodates fishing in a wheelchair. The boat is large enough and has a slightly more powerful engine than the rest of the fleet. It is also slightly bigger and wider and easily accommodates a wheelchair. There is access via the jetty for a wheelchair.

Staff – 8/10

The staff are very polite, helpful and professional, they are also up to date with what’s happening on the water. In fact, most fish and are very competent anglers themselves. And they are always too willing to help, I have found them to be very accurate in their advice.

Toilets and Hot Food – 8/10

The clubhouse has both men and ladies toilets, but no hot food, although pre covid and hopefully after there is a nice seating area with a veranda or terrace to sit and eat your sandwiches or food. Both these respective areas are clean and well maintained.

Shop – 5/10

There is a small shop at the main office with a limited supply of flies, fly tying materials and other equipment for sale.

Life Jacket – 9/10

These are provided by the fishery and must be worn at all times. These jackets are regularly checked for safety, and maintained to a high standard, clearly stored in a prominent position for ease of access.

Wading – 9/10

Please speak with the office as there may be restrictions for health and safety.

Views – 8/10

The scenery is very good. The rolling farm areas on both lakes with the north probably being more picturesque with the foliage and bays with tree-lined shores.

Fly Fishing – 9/10

Generally, the south is the most popular, but the north has some very good fish that are more challenging to be had.

There are many good areas. My favourites are Watery lane, concrete bowl, st Stephens bay, gorse bushes, and duggies. That’s pretty much all the lake and not excluding the middle when the sailing club is shut (when open you are restricted to areas, speak to the bailiffs before you go out).

The north has Yeatsall corner just right at the tunnel under the bridge and the bay area up to the stones. Then hideaway bay is a small but very productive location on its day, you can fish up to the bird sanctuary or nature reserve marked by buoys. Also, along the beech tree point.

Overall rating 9/10

Blithfield Resrvoir is one of the finest fisheries where the fishing is quality matched by the staff and relaxed atmosphere to make your days memorable.
